Yes, Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the presidency. HOWEVER, the Senate requires 60 votes to pass a continuing resolution. Last time I checked, there are only 53 Republican senators. That means AT MINIMUM six Democrats need to do their jobs and vote to keep the government open. But Chuck Schumer apparently prefers playing political games rather than serving the American people. The House passed a bipartisan bill. Republicans did their work. President Trump has operated in good faith. There is no daylight between the president and Republican majorities - we're all united in wanting to keep the government open. The ball is ENTIRELY in Senate Democrats' court. But instead of releasing a handful of senators to do the right thing and keep the doors open, Schumer is holding them hostage for political theater. THIS IS SCHUMER'S SHUTDOWN, not ours. What's particularly entertaining is watching Democrats suddenly care about government shutdowns when troops won't be paid, TSA agents won't be paid, WIC programs will be delayed, and FEMA services won't be provided during HURRICANE SEASON with two hurricanes currently off our coast. WHERE WAS THIS CONCERN when you were pushing massive spending bills and demanding $1.5 trillion on top of funding you already agreed to? Your demands are completely ridiculous and disingenuous, Congresswoman. The problems with rural hospitals are a direct result of DEMOCRATIC POLICIES, not Republican ones. But sure, blame us for the consequences of your party's failed healthcare schemes. By the way, if healthcare access is such a priority, maybe you should support a bill to help with that. WE COULD CALL IT THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT. Oh wait, Democrats already passed that disaster, and look how well it's working out! Here's what's really happening: Democrats are desperately trying to blame Republicans for a shutdown that Democrats have the power to prevent, simply because you think it serves your political interests. According to a New York Times/Sienna poll, 47% of Democrats want to shut down the government if their demands aren't met, compared to just 5% of Republicans. Your own base thinks your party leaders are WEAK - only 35% of Democrats say their party has strong leaders, while 80% of Republicans think Republicans have strong leaders. Even CNN, hardly a right-wing outlet, is reporting that Democrats view their leaders as "weak, weak, weak." When two-thirds of your own party either thinks neither party has strong leaders or that Republicans have stronger leaders than you do, maybe the problem isn't Republican governance - maybe it's that your caucus has become a collection of performative politicians more interested in viral moments than actual governing. Hakeem Jeffries couldn't even keep his story straight on CNBC, first saying Democrats don't want to shut down the government, then admitting they do. THAT'S your party's leadership? That's the "strong governance" you're defending? But what should I expect from the party that historically defended slavery, created Jim Crow laws, founded the KKK, and fought against every piece of civil rights legislation? The Democratic Party has ALWAYS been consistent in its willingness to use whatever governmental mechanisms are available to maintain political control - you've just evolved your tactics from chains and plantations to dependency and the welfare state.
