The @AfDB_Group announced the release of two reports, featuring Morocco as Africa’s industrial leader. The bank said it launched the 2025 edition of its Africa Industrialization Index (AI) alongside the inaugural Africa Industrial Investment Barometer (#AFIIB) on the sidelines of its annual meetings in Brazzaville. WITBA Invest SA developed the reports with Trendeo, a statement from AfDB said, stressing that one of the key findings of one report shows that Morocco has overtaken South Africa as the continent’s leading industrial economy. It attributed the situation to Morocco’s sustained industrial upgrading, expert diversification, and strong industrial policy. The report shows that South Africa remains a continental powerhouse, but its competitiveness has declined steadily. North Africa leads across three indices: diversification, attractiveness, and productive anchoring. The region draws 56% of cumulative continental investment between 2020 and 2025, with Morocco and Egypt topping the list. The strategy is simple but profound: build dams using local materials, local labor, and local ownership. With support from the #AfricanDevelopmentBank, #Eritrea has constructed or rehabilitated over 880 dams, most in rural and underserved areas.

Construction of the Bacaad-weyn–Galkacyo Road Underway The construction of the asphalt road linking Bacaad-weyn and Galkacyo is currently underway. The project had previously become subject to political dispute after the Federal Government politicized its implementation. For a prolonged period, the Federal Government based in Mogadishu insisted on directly executing the project, stating that it was funded through a grant from the African Development Bank intended for communities in the Mudug region. During this time, allegations emerged claiming that Puntland was obstructing the construction of the road. Ultimately, the Puntland Government decided to independently implement the project using revenues collected from local taxes, opting to forgo the African Development Bank funding after the project became heavily politicized. #AfricanDevelopmentBank #Somalia #

ECOWAS is set to transform West Africa’s skies into “highways of prosperity” with major aviation reforms beginning January. By abolishing air transport taxes and cutting passenger charges by 25%, the region will see airfare reductions of up to 40%. This is more than a cost-saving effort, it is a strategic move to unlock economic growth long hindered by some of Africa’s highest air travel charges. Lower travel costs will boost cross-border mobility, energising the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Entrepreneurs and SMEs will more easily access markets across the region, enabling faster deal-making, wider expansion, and improved competitiveness. The Africa Prosperity Network applauds ECOWAS’s bold leadership, recognising it as a catalyst for deeper integration and shared progress across West Africa. Visa Openness Despite political and institutional challenges, ECOWAS remains Africa’s best-performing Regional Economic Community in the Africa Visa Openness Index (AVOI) 2025, released on 12 December. Its average score of 0.597 is lower than 2024’s 0.629, influenced by policy shifts and the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger in January 2025. Speaking in Abidjan at the launch of the Index, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, Executive Chairman & Founder, Africa Prosperity Network, emphasised the transformative power of mobility, stating: “Countries must have the capability to build their biometric systems. The more we let people move, the more we create wealth and have a society of dignity”.
