Collatz Conjecture Solved?
The Collatz Conjecture 3n 1 remains a stubborn fortress in number theory. Focusing on raw decimal values is a distraction. The real analytical interest lies in the Hamming weight — the count of 1 bits that define a number's internal binary friction.
The Hamming Weight Metric: In information theory, this is the count of non zero symbols in a string. In our Lightning Storm, we use a specific logic: we strip the most significant bit and count what remains to measure the binary density of the sequence.
Looking at this visually we can see some clear patterns emerge. For all numbers in an N-bit sequence we can find the highest numbers by following a simple rule of looking at the first term in binary. There's some obvious patterns in how you can go backwards from the higher Hamming weighted numbers to get the others besides 511, 31, 29, 1023, and so on.
I've written 'solved' here as a bit of a laugh and engagement bait, but honestly this is related to undecidability and the halting problem. I do think this visualization could convince other CS people that there is no solution but it's not a proof per say.
One reason I might lean towards home schooling is how you could teach real math and more interesting math with AI than we ever could before. Maybe this is a novel visualization and way of expressing the problem that people connect with and we'd never really have that before.
