Le Sénégal avait lancé son premier satellite, Gaindesat1, le vendredi 16 août 2024. Dakar entre ainsi dans le club fermé des pays africains disposant de cet outil stratégique dans l’espace. Parmi les enseignants chercheurs, techniciens et ingénieurs mobilisés, beaucoup sont de l’Université Cheikh Anta Diop. En fait, ce projet est dirigé par un enseignant de l’UCAD, à savoir le professeur Gayane Faye qui officie à l’Ecole nationale supérieure des mines et géologie (ENSMG, ex-IST). Il y a aussi deux enseignants de l’Ecole supérieure polytechnique (ESP) à savoir Ahmath Bamba Mbacké et Idy Diop du département informatique. Ils sont tous les deux membres du comité technique, un groupe de travail spécifiquement destiné à la conception et réalisation du satellite. Du côté de la douzaine d’ingénieurs et techniciens recrutés dans ce projet suite à une sélection rigoureuse, « une bonne moitié est issue de l’ESP ». Ce qui fait dire à l’enseignant Ahmath Bamba Mbacké que « l’Ucad a pleinement participé à ce projet grâce à ses ressources humaines, elle a fortement appuyé cette réalisation ».
