Within the InterAct project, currently active across multiple deployment sites, an external human-machine interface (eHMI) is integrated into the Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK, automated by ADASTEC. Through real-time messages displayed on external screens, the vehicle clearly communicates its intent, whether it’s yielding at crosswalks, approaching a bus stop, or managing passenger boarding. This transparent communication helps bridge the gap between automated systems and human understanding, making public transportation safer and more intuitive for everyone. The World’s First Driverless Bus Operations Have Begun After many years of continuous operations in Stavanger, another milestone has been achieved. Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK automated by ADASTEC’s SAE Level-4 automated driving software, flowride.ai, has now received approval to operate without a safety driver. In Stavanger, where several firsts in automated public transport have been realized, including Europe’s first automated bus operations, deployment on open public roads, carrying ticketed passengers and tunnel handling another milestone has been achieved, marking the beginning of driverless operations. The vehicle is now starting to carry passengers without a safety driver on a BRT line. Operating on a 10 km dedicated route between the hospital and the university, it will transport passengers autonomously in designated sections, five days a week between 06:00–13:00. The milestone was marked through a dedicated ceremony and a live driverless showcase. Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK, automated by ADASTEC delivered safe and continuous passenger transport along a 3.8 km route connecting ski centers and accommodation areas, demonstrating reliable performance in mixed traffic and complex operational conditions. With passenger transport approval from Transportstyrelsen , the deployment highlights the system’s readiness for real-world operations, demonstrating safe and consistent performance in ski resort environments and winter tourism conditions. Building on our experience across 12 countries, this milestone further strengthens our ability to deploy automated mobility solutions beyond urban environments, including new use cases such as ski resorts and winter tourism mobility. Europe's First On-Demand Automated Bus is coming to Madrid, Spain! 🇪🇸 In 2026, the Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK, automated by ADASTEC, will begin operating in Leganés as Europe's first SAE Level-4 automated, on-demand bus service. Through a dedicated app, passengers will be able to request a ride in real time, making daily mobility smarter, more sustainable, and designed around people. This project shows that advanced technology can drive access, bringing reliable, sustainable public transportation to more communities.
