I was excited to see today at Rail Pacific Rail a mockup of the new luxury tourist train called “Siamese Train” that is planned for Thailand. This follows the success of the luxurious Royal Blossom train and looks like another big step forward for rail tourism in the country.
Officials from RTRDA told me that work is expected to start this year by a private contractor, with the train hopefully ready within the next two years.
The designs are heavily inspired by Thai art, culture and architecture, with a strong focus on panoramic views and premium comfort. The planned train set will include several different types of carriages, including 1st Class Panorama Suites, smaller 2nd Class Premium Suites, Panorama Bunk rooms, a stylish lounge car and a dedicated dining car.
The 1st Class suites look especially impressive, with large panoramic windows, spacious seating areas and elegant Thai-inspired interiors. The lounge car is designed as a relaxing social space, while the dining car will offer a more upscale onboard experience aimed at international tourists.
Thailand still has some catching up to do with Vietnam, which already has several luxury tourist trains operating successfully, but this is definitely a positive move in the right direction. If the final product matches these designs, it could become one of the most interesting rail tourism experiences in Southeast Asia.
