🔬 PhD Position: Biomedical Ethics (Open-Track Project)
The Institute for Biomedical Ethics (IBMB) at the University of Basel — Switzerland’s oldest university — is offering a rare open-track PhD in bioethics, where YOU choose your own research topic!
📌 What’s the Project About?
This is an open-track PhD, meaning you can propose your own doctoral thesis topic — giving exceptional freedom and ownership from day one. Candidates are also encouraged to consider the following active research lines at IBMB:
✅ Moral issues in new technological developments in Medically Assisted Reproduction
✅ Ethics of digitalising healthcare
✅ Experimental bioethics
Your project will be selected based on academic qualifications and how well your topic fits the content or methodological profile of the IBMB.
Key duties include:
✅ Coordinating & managing a research project
✅ Conducting qualitative interviews & analysing quantitative survey data
✅ Documenting & presenting research findings in English
✅ Mentoring research assistants & supervising BSc/MSc students
✅ Contributing to academic life at IBMB — teaching, publications & research collaboration

🎓 Who Should Apply?
➡️ Master’s in Bioethics, Philosophy, Law, Health Sciences, Social Sciences or related field
➡️ Excellent academic grades at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level
➡️ Excellent English language skills — essential
➡️ German and/or French language skills — an advantage
➡️ Strong research methods & statistics knowledge
➡️ Experience with quantitative survey analysis & qualitative methodologies (or willingness to learn)
➡️ Highly motivated, independent, organised & responsible
