In 2017, a Tunisian court, denied the removal of the word “Atig” from an elderly Black Tunisians name.
In Tunisia, the word “Atig” which translates to “freed by” was added to Black Tunisians and their descendants names. This preceded their last name which were typically* the name of their ancestors slave owners.
Black Tunisians with this word added to their name faced discrimination. Further subjecting them to poverty, unequal opportunities and racism.
It wasn’t until 2020 Hemdane Atig Dali, an 81 year old Black Tunisian, was the first Black Tunisian was allowed to legally remove “Atig” from his name along with his family. Now he is proudly: Hemdane Ben Jemaa Ben Massoud Dali.
Although this historical moment is one to celebrate, the name is still attached to Black Tunisians names and they have to legally request for it to be removed. Many still report being discriminated against.
*in this specific case I wasn’t able to confirm if Dali was the slave owner who freed their ancestors or if it was their ancestor who was freed. Based on other information I read, I believe it’s the first.

Görüşmemizde finansal okuryazarlığın geliştirilmesinde bankacılık sektörünün rolünü, finansal eğitim alanında yürütülen çalışmaları ve toplumun finansal bilinç düzeyinin artırılmasına yönelik uygulamaları ele aldık.

Que Dieu vous aide à développer l’honnêteté pour enfin assumer la négrophobie et le racisme palpables de vos communautés/de la communauté maghrébine.
Quand un président peut se lever un beau matin et tenir des discours ouvertement négrophobes envers les Noirs. Quand des cimetières ségrégués ont existé (et existent encore) uniquement pour les Noirs. Quand dans certaines mairies le mot ‘atig’ figure encore sur les extraits de naissance. Quand des mots comme ‘abid’ ou ‘Khel’ sont utilisés au quotidien pour désigner des personnes noires.
Tout ça ne tombe pas du ciel. Ça dit quelque chose sur ce que votre société/communauté/culture pense au fond des personnes noires

The week-long Training Program on Financial and Administrative Matters for Good Governance for the employees of Visva-Bharati commenced on 18 May 2026 at 10:00 a.m. The inaugural session was presided over by Dr. Probir Kumar Ghosh, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati, in the esteemed presence of Shri Dhaval Jain, Hon’ble District Magistrate of Birbhum, who attended as the Chief Guest. Other distinguished dignitaries present on the dais included Shri G. P. Sharma, Former Joint Secretary (Finance), ICAR, and Course Director; Prof. Amit Kumar Hazra, Director, SEI&RR, Visva-Bharati; and Dr. Bikash Mukhopadhyay, Registrar, Visva-Bharati. The programme began with an inaugural song, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and the felicitation of the dignitaries. Dr. Nimai Chand Saha, Librarian of Visva-Bharati and Course Coordinator, delivered the welcome address. Subsequently, Shri G. P. Sharma outlined the objectives, methodology, structure, and key components of the training programme, presenting a comprehensive blueprint for the week-long event. Shri Dhaval Jain, Hon’ble District Magistrate of Birbhum, commended the university for helping in successful conduct of the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal and inspired the participants through his encouraging address. The inaugural session ended with word of thanks from Dr. Bikash Mukhopadhyay, Registrar, Visva-Bharati. The inaugural session was compered by Dr. Atig Ghosh, In-Charge, Public Relations Office.
