The Piramide Mayor, also called the Templo Mayor (Great Temple), was the main temple of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlán (modern-day Mexico City). It was the religious, political, and symbolic heart of the Aztec Empire. •The temple was the center of Aztec rituals and sacrifices, especially human sacrifices, believed necessary to maintain cosmic order and keep the sun moving. •The dual dedication reflected the Aztec worldview: survival depended equally on rain for crops and warfare for tribute and captives. •Major festivals like the Tlacaxipehualiztli (Flaying of Men) were performed here. •Construction began around 1325, C.E. soon after the Mexica founded Tenochtitlán. •It was rebuilt seven times as the city and empire grew. •Spanish conquistadors under Hernán Cortés destroyed it in 1521, building the Metropolitan Cathedral over its ruins to symbolize conquest. •The Piramide Mayor represents the center of the Aztec universe acknowledged to be the spot where the Gods gave the Mexica their divine mission. •It embodies the Aztec vision of life as a balance of war, sacrifice, agriculture, and cosmic order. •It remains a powerful symbol of Mexica identity and cultural resilience. #PiramideMayor #TemploMayor #AztecEmpire #Tenochtitlan #AztecHistory #AncientMexico #Mexica #AztecCulture #WorldHeritage #Archaeology #Mesoamerica #AztecCivilization #AztecGods #Huitzilopochtli #Tlaloc #Coyolxauhqui #GreatTemple #AztecArchitecture #PreColumbian #CulturalLegacy @TokenAjawSeba

#Xolotl was the dog god of the Mexica people, commonly known as the #Aztecs. He is represented in codices, statuary, and other extant examples of #AztecArt as a dog or a god with the head of a dog. While this figure might seem obscure, his name and role echo into the present day through a critically endangered amphibian, a scruffy but loyal companion on an adventure to the afterlife, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, a breed of hairless dog. His name (pronounced "SHOH-lot", with the emphasis on the penultimate syllable as is usual with words in Nahuatl) was synonymous with the #Nahuatl term for twin, xolotl. While twins were generally seen as a bad omen and viewed with trepidation in the #AztecCivilization, Xolotl was the patron god of twins and individuals with physical abnormalities, which were a subject of fascination in #Mesoamerican cultures. Likely referencing Xolotl, two-headed dogs and figures with hunched backs and dwarfism appear frequently in the #Protoclassical ceramic art of West #Mexico. Xolotl's contribution to the Aztecs' culture and worldview did not disappear with the fall of their empire. Centuries after his mythic attempts to cheat death, #axolotls still bear the name of the dog god. 📝Read the full article by Jordy Samuels here: worldhistory.org/Xolotl/ #AztecHistory #History #Mythology
