Two individuals were arrested at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, British Columbia, on September 23 and 24, 2025, while protesting the mandated culling of 400 ostriches due to an H5N1 avian flu outbreak. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) ordered the cull after 69 birds died from the virus in December 2024. Farm owners Katie Pasitney and Karen Espersen, along with supporters, argued that the remaining ostriches had developed immunity and opposed the cull. On those same dates, the Supreme Court of Canada had granted a temporary stay on the cull while reviewing the farm’s legal case. Despite the stay, CFIA officials, accompanied by RCMP officers, attempted to carry out the cull, leading to the arrests for obstruction. The individuals were later released but are prohibited from entering the ostrich enclosure. The situation has sparked widespread protests across Canada, with people blocking streets in major city centers in solidarity with the farm but no arrests have been reported at these urban protests. The RCMP is also investigating threats made against businesses allegedly involved in the cull.
