Xbox discussion is probably the most disingenuous discourse you can find in the video game industry, here’s why:
No matter how many genuinely good reasons Xbox/Microsoft gives for people to be upset (and let’s be real, they give MANY), folks make up new ones.
For those like myself that still want to have genuine conversations about the brand, you have to sift through the same repeated talking points that everyone is well aware of.
- Xbox publishes their games everywhere
- Xbox consoles really don’t sell at all
- The next console is a PC
- Game Pass is expensive
- They wrote a check for most of their studios
- They lost the console “war”
These things are all true and as someone who now primarily buys their games on PlayStation I have no horse in this race to try to downplay Xbox’s failures.
Having said all of that, I genuinely love their software output. I thought Starfield, Avowed, Indiana Jones, Halo Infinite, DOOM and many, many other games were great. I have enjoyed them more than the exclusives over at Sony or Nintendo. That’s not to say they are better games, or that my preferences are worth more than anyone else’s, but it’s a completely valid and logical stance.
Xbox has a long list of high quality, talented developers putting out great products consistently. That should be celebrated. It should also be so clear and obvious that it doesn’t need debated. Criticize where critique is needed, but to write off the entire operation because a piece of hardware no longer sells or has exclusives? It’s time to move on.
