LOOK: The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) has released nighttime satellite data of damaged areas during the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit Sarangani on June 8, Monday. Using satellite imagery recorded on June 8, 1:30 AM and June 9, 1:12 AM, PhilSA identified areas with less nighttime light. These insights suggest power loss, infrastructure damage, and population displacement within the areas. However, PhilSA pointed out that satellite imagery may be affected by cloud cover, atmospheric conditions, and variations in nighttime activity. PhilSA used Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Level-1 and Atmosphere Archive and Distribution System Distributed Active Archive Center (LAADS DAAC). Additionally, they also utilized a basemap from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) for the satellite imagery.
