Not the world's most photogenic examples but this is real life #cytopath! These puffballs with wispy edges are actinomyces in a pap smear and are associated with IUD use.

Here's a good one for #pathresidents. This is a lung biopsy. We have roundish-oval nuclei with stippled chromatin, spindled cells in some places. Kind of swirling architecture in this case. What's your diagnosis?

Parathyroid histology (hypercellular parathyroid, in this case):
➡️chief cells - smaller, comprise the majority of the cellularity
➡️oxyphil cells - eosinophilic cytoplasm (lots of mitochondria)
➡️usually ~50% fat, with more adipose as we age

Leiomyosarcomas tend to stand out from their benign counterparts with dramatic nuclear atypia, frequent mitoses, and often necrosis. Keep an eye out for these concerning features when you're on your eleventh fibroid case of the day on #GynPath!

Nice example of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma in this lung specimen. Classic "squamous" morphology is limited in these cases and instead we see nests of high N:C ratio cells with peripheral palisading.

We're always checking the subcapsular sinus of lymph nodes as a prime location for metastases. This is a nice example of a squamous cell carcinoma metastasizing to that area. #PathTwitter #BasicPath

They don't call them "pleomorphic" adenomas for nothing - widely variable morphology in these two cases. One more stroma-rich and one more compactly cellular.

Cute little Walthard rest in a Fallopian tube. Benign nests of bland urothelium-like cells with "coffee bean" nuclei that often become cystic.

One of the challenges when you start learning cytopath (or any path) is recognizing normal variants. This brownish coloration in the squamous cells is just glycogen. "Cornflake" artifact can look similar.
