The battlesystem is unique, complicated but easy at the same time, interactive rewarding and so on. It really is that great.

Heck, there's absolutely nothing wrong with AD&D 2e's BattleSystem(tm) except that it's a wargame saddled with supporting a game for non-wagamers.

The AD&D 2nd Edition variant of Battlesystem was a pretty good mass combat system. It cleaned up many of the flaws from the 1E version.

H3, Bloodstone Wars, written by Douglas Niles and Michael Dobson, with cover art by Larry Elmore. The third module in the Bloodstone saga, and the first to be officially set in the Forgotten Realms (although it didnโ€™t bear the official logo), sees the PCs raiding a city of bandits, using Battlesystem rules, as well as a small dungeon crawl scenario.

The Mines of Bloodstone, by Michael Dobson and Douglas Niles, 1986, cover art by Keith Parkinson, with interior art by Graham Nolan. A sequel to H1 Bloodstone Pass which was originally to be a stand-alone adventure, The Mines of Bloodstone became the second in the four part Bloodstone Pass saga. The module contains options to use the new Dungeoneer's Survival Guide and Wilderness Survival Guide Orange Spines. It also includes two battles where players command an army using the Battlesystem rules. For players without Battlesytem these battles can occur "off stage" while the players make a raid that otherwise occurs after the battles.

Bloodstone Pass, by Douglas Niles and Michael Dobson, with cover art by Jeff Easley, 1985. Designed for TSRโ€™s Battlesystem, the boxed set included a 32-page scenario booklet, a 24-page unit roster, a model-building instruction booklet, 12 cardstock building sheets for constructing a fold-together cardboard village and miniature figures, and 104 cardboard counters. Originally intended as a stand-alone module, it later became the first part of the four-part Bloodstone Pass Saga. It has both a role-playing scenario and Battlesystem combat, in which the town of Bloodstone Pass hires the player characters to organize a defense against an army of evil humanoid monsters, and human renegades led by a powerful assassin. The module's action focuses on leading the armies rather than having the battle occur in the background while the players adventure to find a MacGuffin.

Dominic -- brief but not overt mentions in the intro to BATTLESYSTEM and in Dragon Mag #100, articles by Doug Niles and Michael Dobson. Looking now for an internal review of BS in Dragon that year or the next...

Deadly Premonition. Story is great, characters are neat, with a lot of it influenced by Twin Peaks, and enjoyable to experience. Gameplay is... meh. Battlesystem is kinda clunky.

BATTLESYSTEM (1985) set going to the shop. How many of you used mass combat in your AD&D campaign? This set is missing the 3D figure sheets, almost didn't notice. I was using my photoblog reference to verify, so I caught the error. Link in the comments.
