We know the barriers to accessing healthy food across the UK all too well.
We know too many people are not getting enough fibre in their diets, contributing to ill health.
Now we need action across the food sector - businesses, government, chefs, nutritionists, schools, hospitals, anywhere that is serving food.
And we see BEANS as the perfect vehicle for change!
Food Ambassadors like Rushda, Jo and Nirvani are helping shape our
#BangInSomeBeans campaign, bringing powerful testimonies about the lack of access to affordable
#fibre-rich food, the dominance of
#junkfood on every street corner, and why
#beans are delicious, nutritious, affordable and worth celebrating.
This is why we are backing a major push for people to eat more beans:
⚠️ Diets that are low in legumes are associated with up to 9,000 premature deaths in the UK each year.
📉 On average we eat just one portion of beans a week, and two thirds of the UK population (66%) eat less than one portion of beans a week.
🎒 Secondary school aged children eat the smallest amount of beans of all age groups: just 2/3 of a portion of beans a week.
💷 Beans cost on average 4.5 times less (per 100g) than other plant-based meat alternatives.
🌾 A portion of beans contains 100% more fibre than a chicken breast and 2.5 times more fibre than two slices of white bread.
🌍 To align with the Planetary Health Diet, UK bean consumption would need to be seven times higher.
Let's close the fibre gap 🫘
