Even in this world of blunders
We will do what eâer you say;
Wisdom's voice is weak and wanders
Without love to show the way.
âGoetheâs addendum to the opera Johann von Paris (1812) by Boieldieu and Saint-Just
In 1896, Pissarro painted the Pont Boieldieu in Rouen repeatedly. He wanted to capture how changing weather and sunsets transformed the exact same spot.
The twist? He didn't paint outside.
An eye infection kept him indoors, away from the wind. So he rented a room at the Hotel dâAngleterre. He painted the entire series straight through his window.
Same bridge. Different light, different result?
