🚗 A Powerful Reminder of Community Strength in Bwesumbu! As our team set off to travel from Bwesumbu Subcounty, Kasese after a meaningful co-creation workshop, the weather suddenly shifted. Heavy rain poured down, and almost immediately, we found ourselves facing one of the very challenges the community had highlighted earlier in the day, the poor and slippery road conditions that make movement extremely difficult during the rainy season. In that moment, something extraordinary happened. Community members quickly came together with genuine care and a deep sense of solidarity. Using the local techniques and practical skills they have developed over years of navigating these roads, they guided our team through dangerous sections and demonstrated how to get a vehicle safely out of thick mud. Their support was more than an act of kindness; it was a living example of the solutions they spoke about during the workshop. It reminded us that locally led solutions aren’t based on scientific theories, but on lived experiences, and this community proved that with every step they took to help us overcome the challenge. With patience, teamwork, and collective effort, the community helped our team move forward safely, turning a difficult situation into a powerful reminder of resilience and shared strength. This moment truly reflects what the Local Leadership Labs (LLL) stand for: communities leading with knowledge shaped by experience, and creating change grounded in reality. #LocalLeadershipLabs #LocallyLedDevelopment #CAPAIDSUganda #GreatLakesPeaceCenter #CIVICUSAlliance #KaseseDistrict #CommunityStrength #CommunityDrivenSolutions #LivedExperience #BuildingLocalPower #CoCreation @NaomiAyot @CIVICUSalliance @GlpcUg @CommunitiesOrg @feminature @WACSOF @Feeble_Care_Ug @lacsonug @_RIAMIRIAM @NdezoP @EdrijaruE @WDFUganda @FatinaMasi63153 @taisiqueira_

📘 Community Co-Creating Solutions to Their Biggest Challenge: Education. In today’s workshop in Odramacaku Town Board, Arua City, education emerged as the most urgent issue. Community members shared how poverty, long distances to school, understaffing, poor infrastructure, teenage pregnancies, child labor, and limited parental support continue to affect learners. But instead of waiting, the community has already taken action. They are farming to support school fees, reporting gaps to the education department, building staff houses, strengthening school committees, sensitizing parents on child labor and drug abuse, guiding youth through sex education, and mobilizing families to take education seriously. They even offered land for a vocational training school and committed to supporting school dropouts with skills training. 🌱 Community-Led Solutions. Income-generating activities to support education Building staff houses Parental sensitization and youth awareness campaigns Strengthening PTAs and school management Offering land for a vocational school Supporting dropouts with skills training 🏛 Appeals to Partners. The community also called on government, civil society, and the private sector to support: Construction of more classrooms, staff houses, and bridges Building the proposed vocational school Stronger school inspection and teacher supervision Support for vulnerable learners and teacher capacity Today’s session showed once again that when communities lead the process, they already hold the solutions, they simply need partners who will walk with them. #LocalLeadershipLabs #LocallyLedDevelopment #CAPAIDSUganda #FeminatureUganda #CIVICUSAlliance #CommunityCoCreation #AruaCity #WestNileRegion #EducationForAll #CommunityVoices #BuildingLocalPower
📍 As part of our Local Leadership Labs project, we’re proud to highlight the incredible work of our co-convener, @feminature, led by Executive Director @AnnetLekuru. @AnnetLekuru shared the powerful meaning behind the Feminature Uganda logo, a woman holding a baby under a tree, symbolizing protection, care, and the natural role women play in nurturing families and communities. 🌳👩‍👧‍👦 It reflects the deep connection between feminine strength and nature’s safeguard over humanity. Understanding Feminature & Women’s Role in Society The name “Feminature” blends woman and nature, capturing the essence of women as pillars of life and stability. Women continue to take on the role of primary breadwinners in many homes. The growing number of single mothers and teenage pregnancies highlights social challenges that communities must address together. Economic Impact & Shared Commitment Women’s earnings are consistently directed toward family welfare and stability. This reality reinforces the importance of supporting women and young people through empowerment initiatives. As CAPAIDS Uganda, we value Feminature Uganda’s dedication and partnership in strengthening community leadership and resilience. 💪💖 With an unwavering support from @CIVICUSalliance, our combined efforts continue to uplift families, protect vulnerable groups, and build stronger, more inclusive communities. #LocalLeadershipLabs #CAPAIDSUganda #Feminature #Protection #Women #Children #Nature #Empowerment #CommunityLeadership #Youth #FamilyWelfare

From strengthening local initiatives to pledging renewed action, the community is actively shaping its own development journey with clarity and confidence. Alongside this, groups are also making appeals to civil society, the private sector, and local government, highlighting where partnership and external support can reinforce their efforts and help them scale sustainable solutions. 💧 Community-Led Water Source Management in the Central Region, Kakunyu, Wakiso District! In today’s session, the community has come together to discuss how they can better manage, protect, and expand their water sources. The conversations have been practical and grounded in the realities of daily life, showing once again how much communities can achieve when they lead the planning themselves. Community members shared what they need in order to keep their water points functioning well, including contributing small fees (like 2,000 UGX/per month) to help maintain the wells, sensitizing households on proper water source care, and discouraging practices such as washing clothes directly at the wells. They emphasized the importance of regular maintenance and building a strong culture of responsibility around shared resources. They also discussed ongoing borehole development efforts. Community leaders explained that new boreholes are being expanded from spring sites to serve clean water to these communities. Partners providing boreholes requested land where these facilities can be installed, and the community agreed on forming a committee to monitor and oversee the boreholes, ensuring timely repairs and proper usage. Plans were also made to identify additional locations for three more boreholes, to reduce pressure on existing water points. The parish chief committed to working with community members to map out suitable sites and present these recommendations to the subcounty leadership for approval. The community also agreed to hold monthly meetings to review progress, allow the executive committee to coordinate day-to-day actions, and ensure decisions are communicated to the parish chief for follow-up. Today’s discussions showed a community that is organized, proactive, and deeply committed to improving its access to clean and safe water, leading the work themselves, with partners walking alongside them. #LocalLeadershipLabs #LocallyLedDevelopment #CommunityCoCreation #WaterSourceManagement #CAPAIDSUganda #JEDA #CIVICUSAlliance #CentralRegion #CommunityVoices #BuildingLocalPower

🌍 Communities Taking the Lead in Kaswa and Kasangali, Kasese District! Yesterday’s Local Leadership Labs (LLL)workshop in Bwesumbu Subcounty brought together residents from Kaswa and Kasangali Parishes, who showcased what locally led development truly looks like, identifying their challenges and co-creating solutions that come directly from the community itself. With support from @CIVICUSalliance , our co-convener the @GlpcUg , alongside @CapaidsUganda , engaged community members who highlighted their main priorities and actions: In Kaswa and Kasangali Parishes of Bwesumbu Subcounty, Kasese District, community members identified a range of pressing challenges affecting their daily lives. These included the lack of a health facility, limited access to electricity, poor and unsafe water sources, inadequate health services, poor road networks, and education challenges such as the shortage of schools and long distances learners must travel. In response, the communities proposed a unified set of practical, locally led solutions. They collectively committed to providing land for the construction of new health facilities, schools, and water projects; opening and maintaining roads through community labor; and leading local mobilization and sensitization on health, hygiene, and sanitation. They also called for external support to help construct and equip health centers, extend electricity to their villages, develop clean water sources such as boreholes and protected springs, and build more schools on the land they have already offered. These practical, community-driven solutions show the real power of community ownership and collaboration. When communities lead, sustainable and lasting change prevails. Through the Local Leadership Labs, @CapaidsUganda , @GlpcUg , and @CIVICUSalliance continue to create safe spaces where communities define and drive their own development. #LocalLeadershipLabs #LocallyLedDevelopment #CAPAIDSUganda #GreatLakesPeaceCenter #CIVICUS #KaseseDistrict #CommunityCoCreation #BuildingLocalPower #InclusiveDevelopment

As the Local Leadership Labs (LLL) workshop continued in Bushenyi District, community members took the lead in identifying and discussing the pressing challenges affecting their daily lives. Working closely with our co-convener, @WACSOF , community members shared openly and thoughtfully, proving once again that real solutions begin with the community itself. Among the key issues raised were inadequate agricultural extension services, lack of essential medicines, absenteeism of health workers, limited health specialists such as dentists, and poor performance in schools. From these discussions, the community proposed practical, home-grown actions, including: ✅ Sharing information with local leaders to improve coordination and accountability. ✅ Holding regular sensitization meetings on preventable diseases. ✅ Promoting behavioral change through better sanitation and hygiene practices. These ideas came directly from the community of Kyabugimbi, Bushenyi, shaped by their own experiences and priorities. They reflect exactly what locally led development under the Local Leadership Labs is all about: communities identifying their challenges, owning the process, and co-creating solutions that work for them. #LocalLeadershipLabs #LocallyLedDevelopment #CAPAIDSUganda #CommunityCoCreation #WACSOF #BushenyiDistrict #WesternUganda #CommunityVoices #BuildingLocalPower #InclusiveDevelopment

🌱 Communities Co-Creating Real Solutions in Kigezi! Today’s Local Leadership Labs (LLL) workshop in the Kigezi Region brought out the true meaning of locally led development. After identifying key challenges earlier in the day, community members came together again, this time to co-create practical, community-centered solutions that respond directly to their daily needs. With support from our co-convener, Local Sustainable Communities Organization, participants discussed and presented clear action points aimed at improving infrastructure, health, and education services within their communities. For roads and transport, the community proposed: •Expanding existing roads. •Opening and connecting more feeder roads. •Installing culverts. •Laying murram to improve accessibility. •Providing stretchers for emergency movement where roads are impassable. •Continuing community work to open and maintain roads together. For healthcare, participants emphasized the need for: •Reliable ambulance services. •More medical supplies in health facilities. •Proper record-keeping and documentation. •Decent accommodation for health workers. •Training health workers in customer care. •Ensuring hospitals have enough drugs and not diverting them to private clinics. •Increasing hospital beds and beddings, especially at Kashelegeyni Health Centre III. •Promoting regular health check-ups. •Improving sanitation and hygiene in health facilities. •Providing seats for patients and caretakers in hospital waiting areas. For education, the community shared solutions such as: •Distributing desks to address the shortage of seats. •Providing lunch (posho) for learners to keep them in school. •Supplying adequate learning materials and textbooks. •Supporting school feeding programs in primary schools. •Encouraging the use of inspection and school assemblies to improve discipline and attendance. •Developing local church-based schools to increase access to education. •Strengthening support for agricultural and school garden projects to grow food for pupils. •Introducing attendance books and stronger school management practices. •Working with parents to reduce absenteeism and encourage responsibility among families. The workshop was honored by the presence of Mr. Moses Tumwijukye, the District Education Officer; Mr. Moses Akampulira, the Senior Community Development Officer for Gender, Culture & Community Development; and Ms. Racheal Kemigisha, the Community Development Officer, who all commended the community for taking ownership of the process. The community also suggested how @CapaidsUganda and its partners could further support, including helping with hospital beds, health worker accommodation, training local health champions, and facilitating ambulance and outreach services to reach more people. These solutions came directly from the community itself, a true reflection that when people are trusted to lead, they already have the ideas, knowledge, and drive to shape lasting change. Through the Local Leadership Labs, CAPAIDS Uganda, with support from @CIVICUSalliance , continues to nurture spaces where communities not only share their challenges but also co-create their own pathways to development. #LocalLeadershipLabs #LocallyLedDevelopment #CAPAIDSUganda #CommunityCoCreation #LocalSustainableCommunitiesOrganization #KigeziRegion #CommunityVoices #BuildingLocalPower #InclusiveDevelopment
