Spot on about Africa's business environment!
@EfosaOjomo I Totally agree with your article on Africa's business landscape! As a Nigerian entrepreneur myself (restaurants, food processing (Rice Milling & Garri Production), Maritime Logistics, Fashion, Entertainment, and soon a Fintech app!), I see these challenges daily.
The "Great Miscalculation" is real. Multinationals come in expecting a walk in the park, get frustrated by the lack of infrastructure and market maturity, then leave. But Africa is not promising an easy ride! The reality is Africa is a developing continent. We have massive potential, a young & energetic population, an almost none existent middle class. But it's still hard. Infrastructure needs work, institutions are evolving, and per capita government spending is a fraction of developed nations.
So how do we succeed?
- Embrace the Hustle! Building a business in Africa requires creativity, resilience, and a long-term view. We can't expect a perfect environment - we have to be part of creating it.
- Think Market Creation, Not Exploitation. There's a vast base of non-consumers who aspire for a better life. Focus on creating a market by making your product or service accessible and desirable, not just selling to a tiny elite.
- Invest in People & Patience. Building a skilled workforce and navigating complex regulations takes time. Partner with local talents, train your team, and be there for the long haul.
Africa rewards the committed. Yes, it's difficult, but the potential is incredible. By working together - entrepreneurs, investors, governments - we can build a thriving African business ecosystem that benefits everyone.
