The Gorkha Empire annexing Butwal (where Lumbini, Buddha's birthplace, is located) was a trigger for the Anglo-Nepalese War. The Treaty of Sugauli made the Gorkha Empire cede a lot of land to the British EIC but the Terai containing Lumbini was given back to Nepal in Dec 1816
