The Fellows presented deep-dive innovative solutions built from real field immersion—spanning the Kinangop Tree Nursery, Njabini Forest Station, the Inter-Basin Transfer Tunnel, Sasumua Dam, and the Tana Delta Irrigation Project (TDIP). That grounding matters. Solutions without context rarely survive contact with reality. We explored practical applications in flood forecasting, infrastructure optimisation, soil degradation tracking, water resource management, and climate resilience planning. A standout was a prototype dashboard designed to convert complex environmental and hydrological data into decision-grade intelligence for operational use. Earth Observation Hackathon Kicks Off at UoN to Drive Data-Driven Innovation Today on January 13, the University of Nairobi C4DLab in collaboration with Kenya Space Agency (KSA) and Expertise France (EF), kicked off Earth Observation hackathon 2026. The EO Hackathon is a hands-on, immersive innovation program where multidisciplinary teams work with real Earth observation datasets to develop impactful prototypes. In the next two days, the students will engage in problem discovery, solution design, data analysis, and rapid prototyping supported by expert mentors. The designs are practical, data-driven solutions focused on climate resilience, agriculture, public health, urban planning, disaster management, and environmental sustainability. The initiative strengthens Kenya’s national capabilities in space technology applications and nurtures young innovators capable of building tools that support evidence-based decision-making.

This morning, I had the opportunity to meet a cohort of young, curious minds — the @uonbi @C4DLab Innovation Fellows — as they step into one of the most critical assignments of our time: rethinking climate adaptation for fragile ecosystems like the Tana and Athi River Basins. I walked them through the real work TARDA does — work that stretches far beyond policy documents. From managing Kenya’s largest water towers to navigating the ever-thinner line between flood emergency and drought crisis, our role demands precision, resilience, and creativity. I also challenged them with the uncomfortable truth: 📍 That river basins aren’t just geographical zones — they are food systems, safety nets, and economic corridors. 📍 And that unless innovation walks with the people, it remains just theory. These Fellows are exploring nature-based models that, if sharpened well, could become national assets — anchoring smarter early warning systems, restoring degraded ecosystems, and triggering new livelihoods in communities that need them most. Their visit was a reminder — that while we manage rivers, data, and development — we must also invest in the next generation of thinkers who will inherit this responsibility.
