The lab was developed in a matter of days in late March by leading health experts at LSU Health Shreveport, as COVID-19 began spreading like wildfire around the world. The lab had support from Governor John Bel Edwards, LSU Health Sciences Center Chancellor Dr. G.E. Ghali, as well as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. The organizations that contributed viral sequence data from Louisiana were LSUHS EVT laboratory, MiGS Center, Garry Lab (Tulane), the Andersen Lab (Scripps Research), BioInfo Experts, LSU Baton Rouge, Gingko Bioworks, the Louisiana Department of Public Health and the CDC.   Once sequence data is generated, it is uploaded to GISAID, a science initiative for epidemics/pandemics that has become a key resource for international collaboration efforts to combat COVID-19 and influenza. Beginning in March of 2020 with the creation of the Emerging Viral Threat Lab, a high-capacity, PCR lab which quickly enabled robust COVID-19 testing in north Louisiana. This noteworthy accomplishment was followed by life-saving clinical trials, expanded testing and ultimately large scale community vaccination clinics to include outreach to the medically underserved. "Our group of virologists here, who are absolutely phenomenal, had a bunch of colleagues they were corresponding with and they realized in Seattle this was a problem and realized early on that the testing needed to diagnose COVID-19 wasn't working.'' Test kits recommended by the Centers for Disease Control were not working. Scientists collaborated on ways to correct the testing problem. "That's when Dr. (Andrew) Yurochko reached out to me and said, 'I think this is a real problem. I think we can solve some of this and we can help with this,'' Kevil said. The CEVT was established in March 2020 to address the urgent testing needs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has also sequenced over 18,000 SARS-CoV-2 genomes as part of international efforts to better understand the SARS-CoV-2 virus and inform vaccine design.
