Last outreach for the year, from my notes. A quick paper now on arxiv, connecting the dots between CFEngine and modern LLM - the attention and context model. From LLM to LIM (less is more). arxiv.org/abs/2512.19084

The @Cloudflare outage really reminds me of a principle I insisted on with CFEngine: NO LICENSE SERVERS! The few licenses I had to rely on are now all disabled. Thank you.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I definitely had used a lot of languages at that point, but mostly by virtue of being in ops. So, bash, perl, Golang, SQL, cfengine, various configs, probably more I'm forgetting. I'd mucked with emacs lisp and never had a lightbulb moment with it. Attended a brown bag presentation about Haskell and got to "no universal nulls" and got religion on the spot. Took a while longer for me to become proficient at it, just because of the state of the onboarding materials for it.

Sure but there’s this strong trend where if you hire an Indian manager, eventually that team will become Indian over time. Cfengine -> eventual consistency

I've written a bit about context recently. It doesn't feel like anything new -- basically what we were doing 30 years ago with agents in CFEngine, just on a much bigger scale. But then there's the flurry of activity around "small language models" .... good or just in defiance?

I have idle thoughts like, "what if I write an ansible / cfengine-alike in rust" occasionally and then I remember I don't actually enjoy ops and I'd only push this idea as far as it needed to go to serve my needs. I hate ops automation slightly less than ops.

With CFEngine, you install a software agent on each host in your infrastructure, to perform the changes you want to automate. Our latest blog post takes a look at this approach, why it can be beneficial, and some real world examples of how to utilize it: cfengine.com/blog/2024/benef…

It starts with cfengine in the early 1990s, and it carries on in essentially every piece of software that matters in the space today. I've dedicated a significant portion of my own life to building and using tools that leverage these ideas.
