City models have evolved from maps and 3D representations to digital twins, agent-based models, and AI-powered simulations. But one crucial layer is still often missing the citizens.
This review argues that future city models should not only represent buildings, networks, traffic, and infrastructure, they must also account for people’s needs, behaviors, interactions, and “mental spaces.”
💡 Key insights:
• Traditional city models are strong at representing urban form, scale, and infrastructure
• Digital twins and agent-based models bring cities closer to dynamic simulation
• Generative AI and large language models open new possibilities for modeling citizen behavior and social interaction
• The authors propose a vision of “Social AI in a city ecosystem” integrating citizen models with structural and process models to support more human-oriented planning
💬 Discussion:
As AI reshapes urban modeling, are we building smarter representations of cities or finally learning how to model the people who make cities alive?
