đ¨REAL CHECK FRAUD VICTIM STORY: Tampa mom Abigail Reynolds mailed a $1,000 check to her kid's school using a secure USPS blue mailbox near home.
Thieves stole it, washed the ink, rewrote it for $4,500, & cashed itâoverdrafting her account & causing huge headaches.
This happened right at the start of 2026.

Abigail said she dropped the check in the mailbox like always, but soon her bank alerted her to the massive unauthorized withdrawal.
The original payee (school) never got a dime, while fraudsters pocketed thousands. She was out the money temporarily, facing fees & stressâclassic "check washing" where chemicals erase details & crooks rewrite higher amounts or new names.
Similar to tax payment/refund thefts exploding this year (property taxes, IRS checks targeted). Mail theft reports surged, with blue boxes often hit.
After reporting to Tampa PD & her bank,
Abigail got her money back & the case is under investigationâbut not without a "major financial headache" as she described. Many victims aren't so lucky if they delay reporting.
This isn't rare: dozens of similar cases in FL alone, plus national rings busted for millions in stolen Treasury/tax checks.
