It’s National Check The Microchip Day 🐕🐩🦮🐕🦺🐈🐈⬛
Can you remember registering your contact details on your dog or cat’s microchip database?
Registering your pet’s microchip number at your vet clinic is not registering on a UK database that meets Government standards and will leave your pet unregistered and extremely vulnerable.
If you can’t remember, why not just take a few seconds to check now, it will make a huge difference if your pet goes missing.
Find your pet’s microchip number:
The number will be on the microchip paperwork you received with your puppy, rescue or previous owners.
Ask your vet: Your vet will have the microchip number on your pets file but this will not register your pet on a UK microchip database.
If you can’t find the microchip number, your vet will scan the microchip for you, free of charge.
Now you have the microchip number, you can copy and paste the number into a microchip checker, all databases have one. The 23 microchip databases are listed on this Government link:
gov.uk/get-your-dog-cat-micr…
We recommend HomeAgain, PetDatabase and PETtrac
You will find out if your microchip is registered or not but be careful as the big databases are changing their charges.
After the initial fee to microchip your pet, there is a pet microchip database registration fee which up to now has covered the life of your pet, with some databases charging to update contact details. There are also a couple of databases that offer a free service.
We now know that a few well known big databases, like Identibase and Animal Tracker, want to change the payment system by charging a yearly subscription plus charging customers who want to move databases! All the while working against the Government’s proposed single point of access plans, which would be available for the veterinary profession, animal wardens, rescues and police, to check microchip registration quickly and reuniting pets without delay, instead of calling 23 databases individually.
Please check your pets registration now, if your pet has an unregistered microchip anyone can add their details and your pet will be lost forever.
If you have noticed any changes with your pets database, please comment on the original post. Thank you.
