Claim approved. Insurer paid 4 lakh. You still paid Rs 40,000 from your pocket.
Wait... what? 😳
Here's what happened 👇
Hospitals charge for hundreds of small items like gloves, syringes, cotton, IV tubes, PPE kits. These are called "consumables" and most policies quietly exclude them. Over a 5-10 day stay, these add up to thousands.
Then there are "non-payables" registration fees, food, toiletries, attendant charges. Not medical, so not covered. There are officially 199 such items on the excluded list.
And the biggest trap? Upgrading your room. If you pick a room above your policy's limit, the insurer doesn't just cut the extra room cost. They proportionally reduce your entire bill doctor fees, procedures, everything.
One room upgrade = lakhs out of your pocket.
What to do:
→ Always ask for an itemized bill before discharge
→ Check if your policy has a consumables add-on
→ Stick to your policy's room category
