The tooling space for India D2C is ultra competitive. Many companies are vying for the same customer and all competing on feature parity and price. Most providers are low quality and companies jump through providers extremely often - this holds true for even the ‘big players’ I know this because @ReferRush integrates with all and brands are not happy with any solution. From what I’ve seen, here are the brand favorites Checkout Shopify Native GoKwik Razorpay Shiprocket Shopflo CashFree Brand favorite: None. Brands are always A/B testing WhatsApp AiSensy Alpha Chatbox BIK BiteSpeed Business on Bot CleverTap ConvertWay Interakt Karax Kwikengage Limechat Myoperator Netcore QuickReply SagePilot Spur WATI WebEngage Razorpay Konnect Brand Favorites : BIK, BiteSpeed, Kwikengage, Interact, Spur, SagePilot Shipping Clickpost Shiprocket Prozo Kwik Ship Brand Favorites : Shiprocket & ClickPost Customer acquisition Meta @ReferRush Blinkit Zepto Instamart Myntra Brand favorite : Meta Takeaway —> Companies are mostly building the same thing with little to no innovation. Brands still struggle to acquire customers and make creatives and no one is solving for this.

Most people underestimate how hard it is to build real infrastructure software. @ReferRush looks simple on the surface: referrals, affiliates, payouts. Under the hood, it’s a minor miracle it works at all. We sit on top of Shopify’s APIs and have to respect every edge case they throw at us. Orders, refunds, partial refunds, cancellations, duplicate webhooks, race conditions. Miss one thing and attribution breaks. We have to design fraud systems that don’t hurt genuine customers but still stop abuse. That means configurable rules, thresholds, delays, manual overrides, and audit trails. Every brand wants something slightly different, and all of it has to be safe. Then comes distribution. WhatsApp APIs for messaging at scale. Email APIs for fallbacks. SMS through multiple providers depending on reliability. Retry logic, delivery receipts, failure handling. One provider goes down and the system still has to keep working. Payments are another beast. Razorpay APIs for collections and payouts, UPI constraints, mandates, wallet balances, reconciliation. We can’t afford to be wrong here. Money moving incorrectly is existential risk. Logistics and attribution add another layer. ClickPost APIs to understand delivery states. Mapping shipped, delivered, RTO, and returns back to referral logic. One mismatch and brands lose trust. Then there’s the infra stack holding all of this together. Google Cloud for compute. Firebase for real-time workflows. ClickHouse for analytics at scale so dashboards don’t crawl once data grows. Internal event pipelines so one failure doesn’t cascade across the system. Monitoring, alerts, backfills, replays. Add to this dozens of smaller but critical pieces: auth, permissions, role systems, webhooks, queues, retries, idempotency, analytics correctness, versioned APIs, backwards compatibility. And all of this needs to work together without breaking when traffic spikes or a partner changes behavior. We’re doing this with a team of four engineers. No army. No layers of middle management. Just a small group of extremely sharp people who understand systems end to end and fix things every single day. This has reinforced one belief for me: if you can actually find and identify real talent, you don’t need massive teams to build hard things. Building ReferRush is genuinely difficult. The product surface area is large, the blast radius of mistakes is real, and the standards have to be high. And yet, every week, the system gets more stable, more robust, and more powerful. Quietly proud of this team and what they’re shipping.

Ganesh thanks for sharing this. It is my EXACT thesis. Build and suffer for India’s D2C market today and reap the rewards 10 years later as the only referral and affiliate solution built for India with tens of thousands of merchants having ReferRush as their only option. We’ll integrate with GoKwik , Shopflo, ClickPost, delivery, the works. All investors. Folks ranging from elevation capital to @anmolm_ believe going to America is key. I think otherwise. Because investors in India are so America focused I decided to start another agency just to fund us. It’s wild how much internal conviction I have on this. I’m betting my life on this and if I’m right I’m a billionaire responsible for 20% sales for D2C sites in India. If I’m not and the market doesn’t grow - I had fun anyway!! (But it’s so obvious the market is gonna grow)
Sam Altman: “The question that investors usually ask is, how big is your market? I think this is a terrible question. You would never ask a startup how big is your current revenue and make an investment decision based off of that. You'd want to know how it's going to grow. And the same thing for markets. The markets that are best for startups are small today and will grow explosively over the next 10 years. Very few investors ask this question. We like to see a market that is maybe small today but growing very quickly. And then the thing that is not perfectly predictive but pretty good is: has the company already captured a significant part of some small market? So, Airbnb by the end of YC had captured a significant amount of pre-existing apartment renters in New York City. Stripe had captured nearly 100 percent of YC companies in their current batch that wanted to process payments. We'd look for something like that.”

The WhatsApp business team is missing a massive opportunity. They can create a world class vibrant eco-system for their merchants that can unlock billions of dollars with this one fix: “A brand should be able to pick and choose different services from the best providers to operate message templates under a single number.” For instance, a company like @myfrido should have the ability to choose - Clickpost for order updates - ReferRush for referrals and affiliate - JudgeMe for reviews Currently, brands have to select a provider like limechat, and the other three providers need to work with limechats APIs. This is extremely problematic for these reasons: 1.Every provider has different APIs, making it difficult to scale. 2.Providers’ APIs fail, making it impossible to have fail-safes for critical flows like payments and payouts. 3.Providers’ UX vary, forcing services like @ReferRush to spend time integrating instead of innovating. 4.Providers encode links that breaks attribution, tracking, and referral analytics. 5.Merchants lose the single-brand experience. Customers message one number for referrals and another for support. 6.Merchant onboarding slows down massively! Each new provider requires re-verification and API setup, turning what should be a 2-hour setup into a multi-week process. 7.Cross-app automation becomes impossible. Brands can’t create seamless workflows like “if a customer leaves a review, send them a referral link.” 8. Data privacy and compliance risks increase. Every new number means a new data storage pipeline and potential leak point. 9. WhatsApp’s own user experience suffers. Customers start muting or blocking business numbers because they receive fragmented, repetitive messages. 10. Developers stop building for WhatsApp. Innovation stalls because integration costs are too high for startups that could otherwise create value on the network. 11. Meta loses potential monetization. A unified, open ecosystem would let WhatsApp capture more business communication spend (ads, automation, and API usage) under one umbrella. 12. No marketplace effect. Without interoperability, there’s no App-Store-like ecosystem for WhatsApp where businesses can plug in the best-in-class tools. 13. Customer service handoffs fail. If a user starts a chat about an order, another system can’t seamlessly continue the same conversation thread @ReferRush success can be *monumental* if they solve for this. This means brands can seriously make money through referrals and affiliate because we can control the messages sent *without* limechat. I’ve already got in contact with their head of business partnerships and I’m running an email and sales campaign to make it work. Let’s see what we can do!

I just had a demo call from ClickPost and it was completely AI-based, Super impressive. This could genuinely help reduce RTOs on COD orders and fix a lot of customer engagement issues.
