INTERPOL,
@UNODC, and the Government of Norway have launched the next stage of a major global effort to fight illegal tropical deforestation.
The third phase of the Law Enforcement Assistance Programme to Reduce Tropical Deforestation (LEAP) was announced in the margins of the
@united4wildlife Global Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
LEAP helps countries work together to stop the criminal networks that profit from illegal logging and timber trafficking. From Asia-Pacific to Latin America, the programme brings together police, customs, environmental authorities, prosecutors, and financial investigators to share information, carry out joint operations and strengthen laws.
Funded by NICFI
@climateforest, this new phase will mainly focus on tropical forests in Brazil, Ecuador, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Peru, and will also address illegal mining - especially in the Amazon Basin - as a major cause of deforestation.
