💪 Healthy forests = healthy communities
Forests are the economic backbone of rural communities - providing food, medicine, fuel and income while delivering cooling effects, clean water and stable soils.
Forests help absorb carbon, regulate temperatures and strengthen resilience against climate impacts.
Protecting them means protecting one of our strongest climate allies.

Kenya continues to assert its leadership in global climate action by advancing ambitious forest conservation and carbon finance initiatives. This Summit marks a defining moment in strengthening international collaboration on climate resilience.
Today, I had the honor of presiding over the official opening of the 1st REDD Global Summit 2026 here in Nairobi, alongside Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, marking a significant milestone in advancing global collaboration on forest conservation, climate action, and sustainable carbon financing.
This high-level Summit has brought together government leaders, UNFCCC representatives, policymakers, technical experts, financiers, Indigenous Peoples, civil society, and development partners committed to strengthening REDD implementation worldwide.
I emphasized that this Summit comes at a defining moment for the global climate agenda, as countries intensify efforts to meet their Paris Agreement commitments and scale up nature-based solutions.
Since the adoption of the Warsaw Framework for REDD in 2013, notable progress has been made in establishing the policy, institutional, and technical foundations necessary to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.

Today, REDD stands as a critical mechanism under Article 5 of the Paris Agreement, supporting forest conservation, enhancing carbon stocks, promoting sustainable forest management, strengthening resilience, and contributing to biodiversity and livelihoods.
As we approach the 2030 targets, the urgency to accelerate implementation, mobilize climate finance, and ensure equitable benefit-sharing for forest-dependent communities and Indigenous Peoples cannot be overstated.
Kenya remains a global leader in REDD readiness and implementation. As highlighted by PS Mugambi, we are proud to be the first country in Africa to launch a National REDD Registry enhancing transparency, coordination, and credibility in carbon markets.
We remain committed to strengthening partnerships and advancing impactful forest-based climate solutions globally.
