After what we have witnessed in "new"
#Bangladesh since August 5, much wasn't expected from Dr.
#Yunus. But the way he lied at the
@nytimes @ClimateForward event to
@SominiSengupta on issue of political revenge under his watch just took his impression to a whole new level.
When Somini asked how does he, as head of the executive, ensure that justice is blind during the country's transition phase, and that there are no retributions against people for their political beliefs, in a peformance eerily reminiscent of fellow Nobel Peace Laureate
#AungSanSuuKyi's cover up of the
#Rohingya #genocide in
#Myanmar, Yunus said, "Nobody is being politically victimised in Bangladesh"!
This is despite the fact that hundreds upon hundreds of murder cases have been filed, and are being filed, against thousands of people associated with the previous government or the Awami League. An overwhelming percentage of the those charged have no connections or links with the subject matter of the cases, let alone involvement.
The "victimisation" is not only restricted to MPs, ministers, or politicians, but includes hundreds of journalists, academics, writers, activists, researchers, teachers, and intellectuals. They too, are being falsely implicated in murder charges simply because of their political and ideological leanings.
Dr. Yunus said, “nobody is saying that you belong to the old party, so you should be punished”. Actually, that is exactly what is happening.
When pressed on
#mob/street
#violence, he said these these incidents are being exaggerated". The same response he gave in his infamous
@PTI_News interview when confronted on attacks on religious minorities. Despite at least 2,000 communal attacks recorded just between August 5 and 20.
Around 100 people associated with the
#AwamiLeague have been killed in
#Bangladesh since August 5 in revenge attacks and mob lynchings. That's just the ones reported in media! People are being killed in their houses, public places, and even in educational institutions. People are in hiding fearing for personal security or legal harassment, away from their homes for weeks.
In an insult to Bangladeshi media, he asked foreign journalists to come and report on "specific incidents", as if the Bangladeshi
#journalists are not doing that already, despite the chilling effect in reporting anything which portrays the student-military installed regime in a negative light.
Mr.
@ChiefAdviserGoB, here are some of the recent reports from the local media, the same media who celebrated your assumption of responsibility, on the topics raised by Somini:

The first step to resolving any problem is to admit that there is a problem to begin with. Lying at int'l forums can only get you so far.

P.S. Did anyone else notice how his friendly demeanour just changed when Somini raised the topics that he was not clearly interested in, or prepared to, answer?
