कोडीनयुक्त कफ सिरप की कथित अवैध तस्करी के मामले में प्रयागराज पुलिस को बड़ी सफलता मिली है। एयरपोर्ट थाना पुलिस ने मामले के तीसरे आरोपी राहुल कुमार श्रीवास्तव को बिहार की राजधानी पटना से गिरफ्तार किया है।
पुलिस जांच के दौरान बैंकिंग लेनदेन से जुड़े साक्ष्यों के आधार पर आरोपी की भूमिका सामने आई। जांच में पता चला कि कथित अवैध खरीद-फरोख्त से जुड़े कुछ आर्थिक लेनदेन उसके बैंक खाते के माध्यम से किए गए थे। इसके बाद पुलिस टीम ने पटना पहुंचकर उसे गिरफ्तार किया। पुलिस अब पूरे वित्तीय नेटवर्क, धन के प्रवाह और कथित तस्करी से जुड़े अन्य लोगों की भूमिका की गहन जांच कर रही है। आरोपी को न्यायालय में पेश करने के बाद न्यायिक हिरासत में भेज दिया गया है।

Drug Abuse 101.2 – The Story of Sani in Kano
Let me tell you about Sani. Sani is 27, lives in Kano, in a small family house near Kofar Wambai market. He sells second-hand phones by day and plays football with the boys in the evening. Two years ago, he caught a stubborn cough during the Harmattan season. The chemist down the road gave him a bottle of Coflin and said, “Take it when the cough dey disturb you.”
The first time Sani drank it, something felt… different.
The cough stopped, but more than that — he felt calm. The market stress, the pressure to send money home to his mother in Daura, the worry about “when will I marry?”, everything melted away for a few hours.
He slept like a baby that night. So he went back.
Not for cough this time.
He bought two bottles. Then three. Then he started mixing Coflin with other codeine syrups; the ones the chemist called “my special stock.”
No prescription. No questions asked. Just Naira notes on the counter and a quiet “thank you, brother.”
Sani didn’t know he was joining thousands of young men across Kano, Kaduna, and Lagos who turned ordinary cough syrup into their daily escape.
The codeine hits the brain’s reward centre the same way hard drugs do. Soon the “calm” became the only way he could face the day.
He started hiding bottles in his room. His hands shook in the morning. His football friends noticed he was always “tired” or “not in the mood.”
His mother called from the village asking why his voice sounded different on the phone.
One evening, the chemist refused to sell him more.
“Abeg, the new task force people dey around,” the man whispered.
Sani panicked. That night the withdrawal started; body pains, runny nose, diarrhoea, and a restlessness he couldn’t explain.
He couldn’t sleep. He couldn’t work. He cried like a child. That was the day Sani walked into our pharmacy; eyes red, looking ashamed.
I sat him down, no judgement, just facts: Coflin and similar codeine syrups are not “party drinks.”
They are prescription medicines for dry cough. Taking them for high is drug abuse. Codeine is an opioid. Your brain gets used to it fast.
What starts as “just to relax” becomes dependence in weeks.
Health damage is real:

• He is now in a proper counselling programme.
• We gave him safe cough alternatives (non-codeine options) and vitamins to help his body recover. His mother now knows and is supporting him.
• My counselling as a Pharmacist (this one na for every Sani out there): If you buy cough syrup every week without doctor’s prescription, you are in trouble.
Stop now.
Never mix codeine syrup with alcohol, tramadol, or “goro”, it can stop your breathing while you sleep.
Talk to someone.
A pharmacist, a doctor, or a trusted elder.
Shame kills faster than the drug.
Chemists who sell without prescription are breaking the law and breaking lives.
Report them.
Prevention is better: Exercise, pray, talk to friends, build real connections. The high is fake peace.
Sani sent me a voice note last week.
He said: “Pharm, I fit play football again. I fit laugh with my mama. I never knew one bottle go almost finish me.”If you or anyone you know is in Sani’s shoes right now, in Kano or anywhere drop a DM or walk into any registered pharmacy and say: “I need help with codeine.” We no dey judge.
