In Remembrance of Guardsman Michael Sweeney, a young soldier from the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards who was killed while serving in Afghanistan on 1 April 2010.
Michael was only 19, but in his short time in the Army he achieved so much. He was a proud Guardsman who threw himself into every challenge, from ceremonial duties in London to demanding training overseas before deploying to Helmand.
While serving in the Babaji area, Michael carried out patrols, protected checkpoints and supported his fellow soldiers. It was during one of these patrols, while delivering supplies to comrades, that he lost his life after an improvised explosive device detonated.
Those who knew Michael described him as a brave, hardworking and genuinely kind person. He was someone who brought humour and positivity to those around him, and he earned the respect of his friends, colleagues and commanders.
His family spoke of a loving son, brother and fiancé who cared deeply for others and was proud of the uniform he wore.
Michael’s sacrifice, dedication and courage will not be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who served alongside him.
