There is a nuanced, but very profound difference between a public service philosophy that ‘does for’ the community, and one that ‘does with’ the community.
The former is at risk of creating an unsustainable dependency culture, ‘loco parentis’ or, worse, a customer or transactional culture (see the growth of trifling parental complaints); the second is grounded in a sense of shared responsibility, co-creation, and formative
#pureaccountability.
I see this nuance becoming even more critical in the years ahead and goes to the heart of whether public service organisations reinforce or water down the already stretched social glue.
As local solutions become even more critical, boards and executive teams need to be having this philosophical discussion in 2025/26, as part of their vision and strategic planning.
