A Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Health Camp was conducted on May 16, 2025,at Kollegal Taluk Hospital, marking the second such camp inChamarajanagar District under the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, led by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The initiative reinforces the district’s commitment to delivering focused andequitable SCD care.
The camp was formally inaugurated by Dr. Chidambara, District HealthOfficer (DHO), with the presence of Dr. Rajashekar (AMO, Kollegal TalukHospital) and Dr. Deepa Bhat from JSS Medical College, Mysuru. A total of45 patients diagnosed with SCD attended with their families, bringing thenumber of beneficiaries to approximately 100. They received comprehensiveservices, including free medical consultations and essential laboratoryinvestigations such as Liver Function Tests (LFT), Renal Function Tests(RFT), Complete Blood Count (CBC), and Blood Grouping. Additionally, 11high-risk patients underwent Ultrasonography (USG) scans, facilitatedthrough collaboration with Kollegal Scanning and Diagnostic Centre.Genetic counselling was provided to educate families about SCD inheritanceand prevention. Nine new individuals were screened for SCD, and 28patients received disability certificates, enabling access to pensions andwelfare schemes.The camp saw active participation from a multidisciplinary team at KollegalTaluk Hospital, including a paediatrician, gynaecologist, and generalmedicine consultant, ensuring holistic care. Unlike the first camp conductedby the CTRITH WP-3 team, this second camp was primarily led by thedistrict health system, reflecting a strategic shift towards local ownershipand empowerment.
This transition is a critical step in building system readiness, sustainingcare continuity, and integrating SCD services into routine health delivery—key goals in advancing the National Mission in Chamarajanagar and similarregions.
