Soft tissue deformation during body movement has long posed a challenge to achieving optimal garment fit and comfort. Researchers at PolyU have now developed a novel anthropometric method, delivering a revolutionary breakthrough for the design of sportswear and functional medical wear.
Led by Prof. Joanne YIP, Associate Dean and Professor of the School of Fashion and Textiles, the research team uses image recognition algorithms and an analytical model to accurately quantify tissue deformation during movement, with deviations within 2.36 mm. This effectively addresses a longstanding challenge in the design of compression-based apparel.
This technology is highly adaptable to sportswear like leggings and functional medical wear such as compression stockings and post-surgical garments. It enables data-driven design that enhances athletic performance while preventing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries and supports personalised garment design. As a feasible and cost-effective technology, it can be integrated into existing systems and holds promising transformative potential for the industry.
