💥Communities Are Gone Forever — What This Massive Loss Really Means for All of Us
X just announced another big change.
@nikitabier posted that X Communities will be completely shut down on May 6. Instead, they’re rolling out Joinable Links for Group Chat and doubling down on Custom Timelines.
I’m not a community operator — just a regular X user who enjoyed using Communities. I only learned about this today, so I immediately checked out one of the new Group Chats that people are opening.
Honest first impression… It felt a bit chaotic in the early stage. A lot of noise, and the vibe is still settling in.
But the message X is forcing on all of us has become crystal clear:
“Stop obsessing over pulling in huge numbers of people. Start obsessing over quality content and real conversations instead.”
In the old Communities days,
You could just join and automatically see everything
Announcements appeared in the main feed
There was a strong sense of belonging with thousands of people in one place
Most of those convenient features are now gone or heavily weakened. For people who loved big communities, this change really hurts.
However, for regular users like me who actually prefer small but meaningful conversations, this might turn out to be a new opportunity.
The 3 things we should focus on now
- Content (Posts / Threads)
This is now the only way to get noticed on the timeline. Create posts that spark real discussion.
- Replies
The fastest way for regular users to get visibility. Leave genuine, valuable opinions instead of just liking.
- Quote Tweets
Take someone else’s good post, add your thoughts, and turn it into the start of a new conversation.
The strongest combo: Group Chat Spaces
- Group Chat = Our daily “home base”
Limited to 500–1,000 people, so the number game is finally over. If we keep posting meaningful topics, the atmosphere should improve quickly.
- Spaces = Weekly
“voice-to-voice gatherings” If we vote on topics in the Chat and hold regular Spaces, it could create the kind of energy that text alone can’t deliver.
X is clearly moving away from “big-number games” toward a conversation-first platform. Even with fewer people, a lively Group Chat could end up feeling more meaningful than the old large Communities ever did.
I just entered a Group Chat today and I’m still figuring out how to make the most of it.
What do you all think about this change?
If you’ve already checked out any new Group Chats, what was your impression?
As regular users, how are you planning to adapt?
If we focus on Content Replies Quote Tweets Chat Spaces, real connections will become stronger than sheer numbers ever could 🔥
