Number 5 on my #countyflags and it's time to go to Castle Leslie in Monaghan. There are a few variants on the Monaghan coat of arms and again the GAA uses its own logo, but I'm using the crest of Monaghan county council as the basis of my flag design.
For the fourth of my #countyflags I'm off to the banks of the Boyne in Louth. This is a county where the GAA emblems and colours have nothing to do with the county coat of arms.

The second of my #countyflags is Limerick county. I'll do the city later. I also include the symbolism of the crest at the heart of the flag.
One thing that I notice in Portugal is that all the municipalities have their own flags, which fly from the town halls etc. This is something which we don't see in Ireland as we don't have official county flags. As a an amateur vexillologist I've spent some time imagining what these flags might look like and I'll upload them over the next few weeks, starting today in Antrim. #countyflags

Why Does This Flag Have an Unbreakable Knot? 🤔 Staffordshire’s red chevron and ancient Stafford knot have symbolised the county for centuries. This isn’t Wales - it’s Somerset. 🐉 Somerset’s county flag bears a golden dragon on red - a symbol linked to the ancient kingdom of Wessex. The county witnessed the Battle of Peonnum in 658 and the last pitched battle fought on English soil at Sedgemoor in 1685. From the Somerset Levels to Cheddar Gorge and Glastonbury Abbey, this is a county shaped by water, war, and legend. #shorts #Somerset #CountyFlags #Wessex

The Smallest County in England? 🌳 Rutland is England’s smallest county - and one of its most distinctive. Its official flag, adopted in 2015, features a golden horseshoe on a green field scattered with acorns. The horseshoe reflects a medieval tradition at Oakham Castle, where visiting nobles were required to present one to the lord. Despite covering just 152 square miles, Rutland played its part in national history. A Rutland baron signed Magna Carta, and today the county is home to Rutland Water - one of Europe’s largest artificial lakes. Small county. Strong identity. Follow for the story behind every historic county flag. #Rutland #CountyFlags #HistoricCounties

England's Smartest County?🤔 Oxfordshire’s official county flag features a red ox head over a river - a visual reference to the “ford of the ox” from which Oxford takes its name. Registered by the @FlagInstitute, the design also includes wheat and oak to represent the county’s rural heritage. But Oxfordshire is known worldwide for more than its countryside. The @UniofOxford has been teaching here since the 11th century. The county was a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War. And @BlenheimPalace - birthplace of Winston Churchill - stands within its borders. One county: Scholarship. Conflict. Power. Follow for the story behind every historic county flag. #Oxfordshire #CountyFlags #HistoricCounties

Why Does Northumberland’s Flag Look Like a War Banner? Northumberland’s flag isn’t a modern invention - it’s based on the ancient arms of the Kingdom of Northumbria, dating back to the 7th century. The bold red and gold design reflects one of the most powerful early English kingdoms - long before England was unified. This is the land of Hadrian’s Wall, Rome’s northern frontier, and the border wars between England and Scotland, including the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Northumberland remains one of Britain’s historic counties - part of the enduring geographic framework that predates modern administrative boundaries. Which part of Northumberland’s history surprised you most? #Northumberland #HistoricCounties #CountyFlags #BritishHistory #HadriansWall #Northumbria

Why Does Lincolnshire’s Flag Have a Fleur-de-Lys? Lincolnshire’s county flag was adopted in 2005 and features a red cross edged in gold, with blue and green representing coast and countryside. At its centre is a yellow fleur-de-lys, a long-standing symbol of the City of Lincoln. Lincolnshire is one of England’s largest historic counties, stretching from the Humber to the Wash and home to landmarks such as Lincoln Cathedral. #shorts #lincolnshire #countyflags #historiccounties

Why is Lancashire’s Red Rose on GOLD not WHITE? 🤔 The flag of Lancashire features the Red Rose of Lancaster on a gold field - a symbol dating back to the 15th century and the House of Lancaster during the Wars of the Roses. Lancashire was established as a county in 1182 and later became central to the Industrial Revolution. Today, the red rose remains one of England’s most recognisable county emblems. But why is it on gold and not white? The answer is simple - and is covered in this short video. Part of our series exploring the historic counties of Great Britain and their flags. #Shorts #Lancashire #CountyFlags

The #Monmouthshire (Sir Fynwy) flag was registered in 2011. The design originates with arms attributed by mediæval heralds to the 6th century king Inyr. The pattern has a long association with the county and is widely used and recognised. 🇬🇧 #HistoricCounties | #CountyFlags 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
