I again want to thank former State Senator
@JeffreyBrandes for engaging in a good-faith, impromptu debate on property taxes -literally scheduled about 5 minutes before we started.
The no-BS TL;DR of the debate:
Brandes: Property tax relief may be morally attractive, but the mechanism is structurally reckless because cities, counties, rural areas, high-homestead communities, special districts, police and fire, and restricted revenue buckets do not all absorb the hit the same way.
Croaky: Local government necessity does not make every dollar sacred. Property taxes create a coercive claim on the homeowner. Affordability is the crisis. Forcing government to justify, cut, restructure, or find new revenue is the point, not a defect.
These views are not fake-conflict opposites.
They are the nuanced tradeoffs I’m always talking about.
That's governing.
