When we localize #games or #apps into #Czech for example for @bohemiainteract, @doist, @wargaming_net and others, we really focus on one important thing: 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 ✨ (aktuální členění větné). Not every translator gets this right. It's advanced linguistic work reserved for 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴, and you either have a knack for it, or you don't. We do. 🤟 𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁? 🤔 Ever wondered why #Czech sentences sometimes look a little… backwards? It's not a quirk, it's a feature! We're talking about Functional Sentence Perspective (FSP), which is a key element of Czech grammar that 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘸. 🚣‍♂️ At 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀, we translate and localize into 20 languages, but as a Czech company, Czech is our mother tongue and we know it inside out. We know simply translating word-for-word in the same word order won't cut it. Understanding FSP is crucial for creating natural, engaging, effective, and natural-sounding Czech content. Think of FSP as the way information is packaged in a sentence. Czech uses word order to highlight what's new (the 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 or 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢 - new information) and what's already known (the 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘦 or 𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘢 - old information). This means the same information can be expressed in multiple ways, each with a slightly different emphasis. 🧠 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: "Karel koupil auto." (Charles bought a car.) - Here, the emphasis is likely on what Charles bought (a car). "Karel" is the theme (old info), and "auto" is the focus (new info). 🚗 "Auto koupil Karel." (A car was bought by Charles.) - Now, the focus shifts. The car is what's being discussed (old info), and the new information is who bought it (Charles - new info). 🧔‍♂️ See the difference? The words are the same, but the meaning subtly changes. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗻 #𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁. Ignoring FSP in translation can lead to awkward phrasing, misinterpretations, and even a complete change in the intended message.
