A new life cycle assessment suggests calcium-looping #DACCS could deliver high carbon removal efficiencies of 85–96% by 2050 while remaining within planetary boundary limits.
Using industrial data, researchers found removing 1 GtCO₂ would consume less than 2.8% of the global safe operating space.
The study also identified energy supply chains, not capture itself, as key environmental hotspots and highlighted potential cement synergies, with integrated systems potentially producing net-negative cement.

The main takeaway is that using reversible CDR as a bridge to durable CDR is potentially more cost-effective than perpetual maintenance of reversible CDR or an immediate transition to durable CDR.

The CCC is now nonetheless obliged to model a specific NI Net Zero Pathway. As the target is so stretching it includes Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) which is wildly expensive & I doubt anyone involved honestly thinks it will happen.

Of this, 12.8 GtCO₂ is used for carbon dioxide removal via DACCS, while 1.51 GtCO₂ supports synthetic fuel production supplying 27.2 EJ/year of energy.
