The current CA agenda is to reduce farmland. The "logic" is the reduction is caused by the [manmade] water shortage. ... in a state with abundant water and a water storage shortage. Their "solution" after creating a food shortage (and driving up food prices) is to rely more on imported foods. Except imported foods aren't nearly as safe for consumption. "Produce samples labeled as “grown in California” had fewer than 1% in detectable residues or those above EPA tolerances, and 3% of samples had illegal residues. However, of the 96 samples with illegal pesticide detection, 83% were linked to imported produce. Of the imported samples with illegal residues, Ecuador had the highest percentage of violations, followed by Guatemala, China, and Mexico. Produce with the highest percentages of violations included yard-long beans, cactus pear, guava, dragon fruit, chayote, cilantro, and pineapple. Thus, while California sets the global standard for food safety, quality, and oversight, rising regulatory costs and shifting consumer perceptions will continue to act as obstacles for growers. Increased efforts to educate consumers about the strength of California’s food safety system could help close the gap between perception and reality. " Add to the hazards of relying more on imports the potential for disruption of the supply chain, intentional or not, which can create food scarcity. We need to elect folks who support providing reliable ample water for agricultural use and NOT reducing our productive farmland if we want a sustainable future. And be more careful about sources for imported food.
