Every Thursday the AAII survey comes out, and there’s a HUGE reading in bearishness 👀 🤔
The majority of the time it’s not a meaningful topic and the historic avg is 37% bulls, 31% neutral, and 31% bears. So on average it leans a little bit more bullish
An important context to keep track of in the background is the quote “you can sometimes correct through price, you can sometimes correct through time.” I believe we have gotten a little bit of both
The AAII is more of a “contrary indicator” and where it becomes interesting is when it gives “sentiment data” that is contrary to the norm. In this weeks survey we have gotten a HUGE spike in Bearishness at 52% 😳. An added piece of context is that not only has there been this spike that is 21% above average but that it also is a long stretch in “time” of bearish readings. So, one way to describe it is that we have had a “sentiment reset” or “sentiment correction” in both one jolt and for a lengthy period of “time”
It’s likely that since there’s averages over history that is 37% BULLS and 31% BEARS that at some point the negative sentiment “Rubber Band” snaps back to mean reversion of those averages. To me, it shows the rubber band has been stretched for some time and the big pop in bearishness this week tells me that rubber band snap back is imminent 🧐
