Ethiopia Selected to Host the Second African Political Parties Summit (APPS 2026) The Africa Governance Centre (AGC) is pleased to announce that the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has been selected to host the Second African Political Parties Summit (APPS 2026), the flagship annual convening of the African Political Parties Initiative (APPI). Scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa in late October 2026 under the theme, “Governing for Growth: Political Parties as Architects of Africa’s Economic Future,” the summit will bring together political leaders, policymakers, economists, development practitioners, private sector actors, academics, civil society representatives, and development partners from across Africa and beyond. The selection of Ethiopia reflects the country’s growing role in advancing conversations around democratic governance, economic transformation, institutional development, and African-led solutions to continental challenges. It also reinforces the commitment of the African Political Parties Initiative to convene its flagship gathering in different regions of the continent to encourage broader participation and ownership. APPS 2026 builds on the success of the inaugural summit held in Accra, Ghana, in August 2025, which brought together Heads of State, political party leaders, governance experts, and development partners. As part of preparations towards the summit, @Benedicta_Lasi , Chair of the Executive Council of the Africa Governance Centre, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Adem Farah, Vice President of the Prosperity Party and Head of the Main Office, at the party’s headquarters in Addis Ababa. The engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment of both institutions to strengthening political party systems as vehicles for democratic governance, policy innovation, leadership development, nation-building, and sustainable economic transformation. Discussions also focused on preparations for APPS 2026 and the importance of creating African-owned platforms that promote dialogue, cooperation, and peer learning among political parties across the continent. The Africa Governance Centre looks forward to working closely with stakeholders in Ethiopia and across Africa to deliver a successful summit that advances the vision of positioning political parties as effective architects of Africa’s economic future and inclusive development. #APPS2026 #AfricanPoliticalPartiesSummit #AfricaGovernanceCentre #APPI #GoverningForGrowth #DemocracyAndDevelopment

One week after its release, the insights from the recent @ProSyn op-ed by @aminatatoureklk and @KevinCasasZ continue to resonate. Their reflections make clear that the health of democracy cannot be separated from the conditions people experience every day. When inequality grows and fairness erodes, the foundations of democratic life weaken, and trust in institutions fades. The authors argue that democracy’s strength depends on more than procedural participation. It depends on whether people feel protected by rights, included in decision-making, and supported by systems that offer real opportunities. Development and democracy are not competing priorities, they are mutually reinforcing, and societies thrive when both move forward together. As part of the #KeepDemocracyAlive campaign, this op-ed challenges all of us to look beyond elections and examine the broader social and economic landscape that shapes democratic resilience. It reminds readers that safeguarding democracy also means confronting the forces that leave communities behind. If you missed it last week, now is a good moment to revisit their thought-provoking piece on why dignity, opportunity, and inclusion are essential to strengthening democracy’s promise. “If we don’t confront rampant inequality and the sense of unfairness that it provokes, democracy will continue to suffer.” In their latest op-ed “What Democracy Means for a Society’s Bottom Line,” published in @ProSyn, @aminatatoureklk, former Prime Minister of Senegal (2013–2014), High Level Representative for the Senegalese President, and Member of @ClubdeMadrid, and @KevinCasasZ, former Vice President of Costa Rica (2006–2007) and Secretary General of @Int_IDEA, remind us that democracy’s value cannot be measured only at the ballot box, it must also be felt in people’s lives. Their message is clear: democracy and development are not rivals, but partners. One cannot thrive without the other. Where rights and freedoms are protected, prosperity follows. Where inequality deepens, democracy weakens. Published as part of the #KeepDemocracyAlive advocacy campaign led by the @GloDemCoalition, Touré and Casas-Zamora challenge the notion that governance and growth are separate pursuits. They argue that the path to sustainable progress lies in putting people first, in linking the right to choose leaders with the right to live in dignity. Read this powerful reflection on how democracy strengthens economies, societies, and our shared future. Link in the comments! #KeepDemocracyAlive #DemocracyandDevelopment

That's the only way _ #DifferentIdeologies doesn't mean Enemity. This's why some are #TallShortBlackWhite but end of the day we all HUMANS & we can only get #GreatThings done if we EMBRACE each other. It's #HealthyCompetition which is great for #DemocracyAndDevelopment!
