Jean Després (1889–1980) was one of the most influential 🇫🇷 French goldsmiths of the 20th century, redefining modern jewelry through bold simplicity and industrial elegance. Trained as a silversmith, he was deeply inspired by the mechanical world of aviation and early machinery, translating pistons, gears, and propellers into refined wearable art. Rejecting excessive ornamentation, Després favored clean lines, geometric forms, and hammered metal surfaces that captured light in a raw yet sophisticated way. His signature pieces often combined sterling silver with contrasting materials such as coral, lapis lazuli, onyx, and gold, creating a striking balance between strength and refinement. In the late ’80s and ’90s, owning a Swatch felt like owning the future. Limited editions, bold colors, and huge hype convinced many people these plastic watches would become serious investments.
