Today, I participated in a Steering Committee meeting for the establishment of the Puntland Development Fund (PDF), an initiative that I am proud to be part of.
The creation of this fund has been under development for the past six months, with its official launch expected in the coming months. Puntland and its people will provide the initial contribution, demonstrating local ownership and commitment to sustainable development.
The Puntland Development Fund will serve as a financing mechanism for development projects across Puntland. The Fund itself will not implement projects directly; rather, it will mobilize and provide financing for initiatives that advance economic growth, infrastructure, public services, and community development.
As a Federal Member State of Somalia and an integral part of the country’s federal system, Puntland has, throughout its existence, benefited from international assistance and reconstruction support provided by Somalia’s development partners. At the same time, Puntland has consistently contributed its own resources to the financing of many of its economic infrastructure projects. The people of Puntland have also played a leading role in investing in and building critical infrastructure, with landmark projects such as the Garacad Port standing as a testament to the power of local initiative, public participation, and shared commitment to development.
The establishment of this Fund marks an important step toward strengthening local resource mobilization and increasing Puntland’s capacity to finance its own development priorities while complementing support from international partners.
