OPINION: In SMB/SME 7200 RPM SATA For Backups
Most off the shelf enclosures and mini-NAS devices use the least expensive internal drives possible. That means 5400 RPM as a rule with some actually being "eco-friendly" and spinning down.
An Enterprise grade SATA 7200 RPM drive performs best across the board in an external enclosure or drive dock.
Note that a backup destination across the wire at Gigabit speeds would yield about 120MB/Second at the best of times.
As pictured, a USB 3.x attached 7200 RPM SATA drive will pull 210MB/Second or faster depending on where the data is on the platters. Since backups are written sequentially we will also get maximum read performance if there's a need for a recovery.
We use StarTech enclosures, docks, mini-NAS devices, and USB 3.x PCIe Add-in-Cards for most of our backup specific needs.
