Not really PPV provides the probability of having a disease if a test is positive Likelihood ratios are more useful: They update your 'prior' - If you think someone has a 50% change of having pneumonia based on clinical feature and a chest x-ray has a likelihood ratio of 20 for a diagnosis of pneumonia based on the image results-if you get a positive chest xray, you plot out 50% and LR of 20 on a nomograpm (araw.mede.uic.edu/cgi-bin/te…) to get a 95% probability of the patient having pneumonia. The type of thinking is more aligned with how clinicians work through problems that one gets with sensitiviy, specificiy, PPV or NPV. I think there is an XX percent chance that a patient has Y-If I get a test with a certain LR, what is my updated probability of the patient having the disease if the test is positive. The XX percent chance can be the diseae prevalence. There are online calculators for doing these calculations or the nomogram cited above. Here is aGrok explanation of PPV v LR: x.com/i/grok/share/AsX3VN5vG… and here are online calculators University of Illinois at Chicago Diagnostic Test Calculator: araw.mede.uic.edu/cgi-bin/te… An interactive nomogram and calculator where you input pre-test probability (e.g., 50%) and likelihood ratio (e.g., 20) to get post-test probability (~95.24%). It also computes sensitivity, specificity, and confidence intervals. Omni Calculator - Post-Test Probability: omnicalculator.com/health/po… A user-friendly tool to calculate post-test probability by entering pre-test probability and likelihood ratios. It explains calculations and includes tutorials for prevalence and LR.šŸ“· MDApp Post-Test Probability Calculator: mdapp.co/post-test-probabili… A straightforward calculator for post-test probability, using pre-test probability and likelihood ratios, with explanations of the underlying formulas.šŸ“· EasyCalculation - Post-Test Probability Calculator: easycalculation.com/medical/… A simple tool to compute post-test probability by inputting pre-test probability and likelihood ratio, ideal for quick clinical use.šŸ“· Calculator Academy - Post-Test Probability Calculator: calculator.academy/post-test… Allows input of pre-test probability and likelihood ratio to determine post-test probability, with clear steps for medical decision-making.šŸ“· These calculators are free, require no login, and are designed for clinical use, providing results consistent with your example (e.g., ~95% post-test probability). If you prefer a nomogram for visual estimation, the UIC calculator includes one, or you can use the printable CEBM nomogram PDF (cebm.ox.ac.uk/files/ebm-file…) alongside these tools. Let me know if you need help using any of these
