🛑 THE CHEMISTRY TRAP: Why “Cheap Russian Oil” Would Destroy Our National Energy Grid
There is a lot of noise about why the government is using the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline instead of "cheap" oil from Russia or Iran. It’s time to stop the politics and look at the lethal technical facts that would cause a total national blackout if we made the wrong move.
🧪 1. The Refinery Disaster: Light vs. Heavy Crude
Oil isn't just one liquid. Our only state-owned refinery, Eastern Refinery (ERL) in Chittagong, was built in the 1960s with a very specific "diet": Light Sweet Crude (like Arabian Light).
• The Russian Reality: Russian Urals oil is Heavy and Sour. It is dense, packed with sulfur, and requires high-tech "cracking" units that we simply do not have.
• The Consequence: If we pumped Russian crude into ERL today, the sulfur and density would cause instant corrosion and catastrophic pipe failure. We would end up with a destroyed $2 billion refinery and zero fuel for the country. We can't "just switch" any more than you can put diesel in a petrol car and expect it to run.
🚢 2. The Maritime Blockade & The "Force Majeure" Wall
Even if the oil were free, we can't physically get it here.
• The Blockade: With the Strait of Hormuz now a war zone, the sea lanes are effectively closed. Major tankers are refusing to sail.
• The Legal Collapse: Our primary global suppliers, Unipec (Singapore) and Petco (Malaysia), have officially invoked Force Majeure. This is a legal "Act of War" clause that has allowed them to cancel our April contracts. They cannot deliver, and no insurance company on earth will cover a tanker entering the Bay of Bengal right now without a 1000% "war-risk" premium.
🚜 3. The "Boro" Irrigation Crisis
We are in the peak of the Boro irrigation season. Millions of farmers in the North need High-Speed Diesel (HSD) this week to keep the rice crops alive. If the pumps stop, the harvest fails, and we face a food shortage. We don't have time to wait 4 months for a Russian ship to try and dodge missiles in the Gulf.
✅ 4. Why the India Pipeline is the ONLY Lifeline
The 131.5 km Friendship Pipeline is the only "war-proof" tap we have left:
• It’s Already Refined: It doesn’t go to the refinery. It brings finished, ready-to-use diesel directly from the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam.
• It’s Underground: It doesn't need ships, it doesn't need to cross the Strait of Hormuz, and it doesn't need maritime insurance.
• Reliability: While sea-based shipments fell by 50% this month, the pipeline is pumping 24/7. It’s the only reason our northern districts aren't currently in a total blackout.
The Bottom Line: The Tarique Rahman administration isn't playing favorites—they are saving the economy. When your refinery can't handle the "cheap" stuff and the sea lanes are a war zone, you use the land-based pipe that works. Anything else is a recipe for a national collapse just weeks before Eid-ul-Adha.
