I’ve made a lot of this information readily available at a state and district level (not all states or districts report). It’s very interesting noting the difference between the NAEP test scores and the Edfacts district data which shows a very steep decline in every district I checked.

Test Scores shows NAEP trends by state alongside EdFacts district-level proficiency — paired with per-pupil spending so you can see whether more money actually correlates with better outcomes.

What's included: • District finance from Census Bureau (per-pupil spending, revenue sources, property taxes) • Demographics from ACS 2022 (income, poverty, home values) • NAEP scores (math & reading, grades 4 & 8) • EdFacts proficiency trends (2009-2021) • Staffing from Common Core of Data • Civil rights discipline, absenteeism, restraint data from CRDC • Special education rates from IDEA • School referendum election results (WI, CO, WA, MN, IN)

Education data in the US is scattered across a dozen federal agencies in incompatible formats. Census F-33 for finances. NAEP for test scores. EdFacts for state assessments. CRDC for civil rights. CCD for staffing. IDEA for special ed. No one has put them together — until now.

I decided to empirically check if this was true using the Urban Institute Education Data Portal for harmonized NCES CCD, CRDC, and EdFacts data. A model with race, sex, state, and free lunch shares predicts school test scores at r = 0.85, and a bit higher with a combined score.
A recent commenter on statmodeling noticed this when they were looking at local schools to figure out where they should send their kid. They saw that the schools in their area didn't differ so much in terms of test scores, as they did in terms of demographics.

We must use and improve the growth data we have. Our SEDA team responds to the Senate RFI on school-level growth indicators with 4 recommendations, including restoring and improving EDFacts, harnessing NAEP, and incentivizing K-2 growth measurement: edopportunity.org/papers/EOP…

This isn’t just a technical change. It’s a retreat from rigorous, transparent measurement. Since 2021, states only report % above proficiency. No Basic. No Advanced. No real growth tracking. No visibility into how students actually perform. From 2009–2019, EDFacts included full performance level data by school and district; fueling research, benchmarking, and improvement. The November 2024 proposal would’ve brought that back. But in May 2025, ED reversed course. If we care about excellence, not just compliance, we need real data. Let the Dept of Ed know, transparency and performance measurement still matter!
