Get Out of Your Own Way: Quit Being Your Own Enemy and Start Being Your Own Advocate by Harry Petsanis
"Do not overcomplicate things.
If you ask someone to help you, let them help.
If you ask someone to tell you the truth, do not punish them when they do.
If you ask someone to tell you how they feel, do not tell them how you feel."—Harry Petsanis
You often complicate matters more than necessary. Remember, life is intricate enough; there’s no need to add further convolution. When you ask someone to assist you, allow their aid to come without interference. Absorb their help with grace and gratitude, and refrain from controlling the process excessively.
Your pursuit of truth in others is a commendable trait. However, make sure to accept this truth with magnanimity when it arrives. Do not retaliate or punish those who are courageous enough to be candid with you. Remember, truth can be uncomfortable but it’s a cornerstone of growth.
When you inquire about someone’s feelings, ensure it’s not an invitation for you to express your own. This isn’t about your feelings or experiences. It’s about them, about understanding their emotions and perspectives. Practice empathetic listening, giving space for others to express themselves without the need to interject with your narrative.
As for being your own worst enemy, this is about those times when you stand in your own way, blocking your progress with self-defeating actions and decisions. When the path is clear, you often muddy it with errant choices, ignoring the wisdom at your disposal. Perhaps it’s time to listen to the sage advice of those around you. Their wisdom, born from experience, could guide you towards a more prosperous life.
Stop undermining yourself. Cease to be your own antagonist and instead, become your own advocate. Champion your rights, your needs, your aspirations. Stand up for yourself, asserting your desires and dreams. Don’t shy away from demanding the respect you deserve.
Embrace simplicity, appreciate help, respect honesty, empathize with feelings, and befriend yourself. Remember, the road to self-improvement begins with you advocating for your own worth. Change begins when you choose to no longer be your own worst enemy, but your biggest supporter.
